Yilan is a city in northeastern Taiwan and the administrative center of Yilan County, set on a broad plain between the Central Mountain Range and the Xueshan Range. The region is known for rice fields, rivers, hot springs, and a humid climate shaped by frequent rainfall. The Lanyang River and its tributaries run through the surrounding countryside, supporting fertile agricultural land. Yilan city itself combines traditional neighborhoods, public parks, cultural venues, and food markets, while the wider county provides access to forests, mountains, and the Pacific coast. Agriculture remains an important part of the region's identity and landscape.

Yilan's cultural identity is closely connected to agriculture, local religious traditions, and Indigenous communities. The Kavalan people are Indigenous to the Lanyang Plain, and their cultural heritage remains an important part of northeastern Taiwan. The city also has a strong temple tradition, with local shrines serving as places for worship, festivals, and community gatherings. Yilan's traditional performing arts include glove puppetry and Taiwanese opera, while the National Center for Traditional Arts in nearby Wujie presents crafts, performances, architecture, and other aspects of Taiwanese folk culture. These traditions provide a link between everyday community life and the region's cultural heritage.

The surrounding area offers several notable natural and cultural attractions. Jiaoxi, just west of Yilan city, is known for its hot springs and is one of northeastern Taiwan's principal spa destinations. Dongshan River Water Park provides access to the river landscape, while the Lanyang Museum in Toucheng uses an angular building inspired by the area's coastal geology and displays exhibits about Yilan's natural and cultural environment. Further inland, Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area contains mountain forests, streams, waterfalls, and hiking routes. The county's combination of wetlands, farmland, forested mountains, and Pacific coastline creates varied environments within a relatively compact area.

Yilan is particularly known for produce and foods associated with its fertile plain. Yilan scallions are a major local agricultural product, especially those grown around Sanxing Township, and are used in dishes throughout Taiwan. Duck dishes are another regional specialty, while rice and rice-based products reflect the importance of paddy farming. Yilan's traditional markets also feature seafood from the nearby Pacific coast, seasonal fruits, vegetables, and local snacks. The region's hot springs, farming communities, river systems, and food traditions are closely connected to its geography, making Yilan a useful place to explore northeastern Taiwan's rural and cultural character.
