Quetzaltenango, often called Xela by locals, is Guatemala’s second-largest city and a hub of indigenous culture, colonial history, and highland landscapes. Surrounded by volcanoes, including the towering Santa María, the city sits at over 7,600 feet above sea level, giving it a crisp mountain climate that contrasts with the country’s tropical lowlands. Its historic center is defined by neoclassical architecture, lively plazas, and markets that showcase both Spanish colonial influence and the enduring traditions of the K’iche’ Maya.

The city is also a gateway to outdoor adventure and natural wonders. Hikers come to tackle Santa María and nearby Santiaguito, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, while the surrounding highlands are dotted with hot springs, lakes, and scenic trails. Day trips from Quetzaltenango can take travelers to villages where weaving, festivals, and local customs offer an intimate window into Guatemala’s indigenous heritage. This blend of urban and rural experiences makes the city an ideal base for exploration.

Despite its size, Quetzaltenango maintains a welcoming, small-city feel. Cafés, language schools, and cultural centers create a vibrant atmosphere that draws both travelers and long-term visitors.

Tikal National Park
Tikal is one of the most extraordinary ancient cities in Guatemala, hidden deep in the Petén region’s tropical forests. Once called Yax Mutal by its Maya builders, these ruins reveal thousands of years of history in carved stone stelae and towering limestone structures, some of which rise more than 60 meters above the jungle floor. Today, visitors can walk among the Great Plaza and gaze up at the Temple of the Great Jaguar and the Temple of the Masks, reminders of the city’s long legacy.
